Laboratory Accreditation

NABL Accreditation for Testing & Calibration Laboratories

ISO/IEC 17025 โ€” General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories

NABL accreditation shows that a laboratory is technically competent to produce valid results for a defined scope of tests or calibrations. Certsure helps testing, calibration and forensic science laboratories prepare for ISO/IEC 17025 assessment by NABL.

Standard status: Current standard: ISO/IEC 17025:2017. NABL accreditation is granted by NABL (a constituent board of the Quality Council of India); since October 2024 the accreditation cycle is four years with yearly surveillance. Certsure provides preparation support only. Official source โ†—

How Certsure helps with NABL (ISO/IEC 17025)

Certsure Certification is a consultancy based in Lucknow, working with organisations across India. We help you understand the requirements, close the gaps and get ready for assessment โ€” gap analysis, documentation, implementation support, training, internal audits and support during the external audit. The certificate, licence, registration or report itself is granted by the relevant authority, accreditation board or independent auditor.

Who this is for

  • Forensic science laboratories โ€” DNA, toxicology, chemistry, ballistics, documents and cyber/digital units
  • Food, water, environmental and agricultural testing laboratories
  • Construction-material, mechanical, electrical and chemical testing laboratories
  • Calibration laboratories and in-house laboratories of manufacturers
  • Government and public-sector laboratories that need NABL-accredited reports for courts, regulators or tenders

What ISO/IEC 17025 asks of a laboratory

Clause What assessors look for
4 General Impartiality and confidentiality โ€” risks identified and managed
5 Structural Legal identity, defined responsibilities, scope of laboratory activities
6 Resources Competent staff, suitable facilities, calibrated equipment, metrological traceability, control of external providers
7 Process Method selection, verification and validation; sampling; handling of test items; measurement uncertainty; quality control and proficiency testing; reporting; complaints; nonconforming work; control of data
8 Management system Documents, records, risks and opportunities, corrective action, internal audit and management review

How Certsure supports your laboratory

  1. Scope definition โ€” which tests or calibrations to include first, with methods and ranges
  2. Gap assessment against ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and NABL's specific criteria for your discipline
  3. Documentation โ€” quality manual, procedures, formats and technical records that match how your bench actually works
  4. Technical readiness โ€” method verification/validation, measurement uncertainty budgets, traceable calibration, and a plan for proficiency testing or inter-laboratory comparison
  5. Training and internal audit โ€” ISO/IEC 17025 awareness and internal auditor training, then a full internal audit and management review
  6. Application and assessment support โ€” application on the NABL portal, responses to assessor findings and closure of nonconformities

Why it matters

Benefits of NABL Accreditation for Testing & Calibration Laboratories

Results that stand scrutiny

Accredited methods, traceable measurements and controlled records make reports easier to defend before courts, regulators and customers.

Tender and regulator requirements

Many government departments, regulators and buyers ask for reports from NABL-accredited laboratories for specific tests.

Fewer repeat tests

Validated methods and quality control catch problems early, reducing rework and disputed results.

International acceptance

NABL is a signatory to the ILAC and APAC mutual recognition arrangements, which supports acceptance of accredited results abroad.

Stronger technical team

Defined competence criteria, training and authorisation give every analyst a clear standard to work to.

Continual improvement

Internal audits, management review and corrective action keep the laboratory improving between assessments.
How it works

NABL (ISO/IEC 17025) process, step by step

  1. Define scope (tests / calibrations, methods, ranges)
  2. Gap assessment against ISO/IEC 17025:2017
  3. Documentation and technical records
  4. Method validation, uncertainty and PT/ILC planning
  5. Training, internal audit and management review
  6. Application on the NABL portal
  7. Assessment by NABL and closure of findings
  8. Accreditation decision and yearly surveillance

Timelines depend on your organisation's size, the scope and how much of the system already exists. Read how to prepare for an ISO audit.

Preparation

Documents typically required

We provide a checklist tailored to your organisation. Commonly needed:

Quality manual and procedures
Scope of accreditation with methods and ranges
Method verification / validation records
Measurement uncertainty estimates
Equipment list with calibration certificates (traceable)
Proficiency testing / inter-laboratory comparison records
Staff qualification, training and authorisation records
Internal audit and management review records
FAQ

NABL (ISO/IEC 17025): frequently asked questions

No. Accreditation is granted only by NABL after its own assessment. Certsure is a consultancy: we prepare the laboratory, its documents and its people so that it is ready for that assessment.
It depends on the scope and how much of the system already exists. A laboratory with organised records often needs 6 to 12 months of preparation before applying, followed by NABL's own assessment timeline.
NABL expects laboratories to take part in proficiency testing or inter-laboratory comparison for their scope. We help you plan suitable programmes, or comparisons where no formal PT scheme exists.
Yes. Forensic disciplines are assessed against ISO/IEC 17025 together with NABL's specific criteria for forensic science. Chain of custody, method validation and handling of exhibits receive particular attention.
Since October 2024 NABL operates a four-year accreditation cycle with yearly on-site surveillance and reassessment every two years. Always check the current NABL policy documents.
